Worship

is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by God's holiness; the nourishment of mind with God's truth; the purifying of the imagination by God's beauty; the opening of the heart to God's love; the surrender of will to God's purposes- and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy of that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.

Sermons in Lent

As our focus for the Lenten season we will consider the Beatitudes in counterpoint to the so-called, “Seven Deadly Sins”.  The deadly sins are attitudes or characteristics which lead to sin; described by one scholar as “dynamic tendencies and inner dispositions”. They are considered deadly because they threaten or are fatal to one’s spiritual progress. The virtues espoused in Jesus’ famous blessings from Matthew 5 (“Blessed are…”) can keep us on the right path.  Join us as we look at these vices and virtues in order to turn away from wrongful attitudes and behaviors and to cultivate Christ-like life styles.

Healing Rite

This healing rite is based on the New Testament book of James 5:13-16. It offers opportunity to publicly affirm one's faith, to ask God for healing, to entrust one's self to God; and to receive the loving prayers and support of the Church family.

The healing rite will be offered on the fourth Sunday of every month. Check the church calendar for dates and service times. It is also available on request. The Pastor and an Elder or Deacon will come to a home or hospital or the petitioner may come to the church.

Welcome the Children

Our denomination’s Book of Order is clear on the importance of engaging in both Worship and Christian Education.  This includes children.  Here’s an excerpt regarding worship:  “Children bring special gifts to worship and grow in the faith through their regular inclusion and participation in the worship of the congregation… The Session should ensure that regular programs of the church do not prevent children’s full participation with the whole congregation in worship, in Word and Sacrament, on the Lord’s Day.”

We encourage parents to bring their children to services of worship as well as Sunday School.  Our Sunday morning schedule allows for this.  Families (children and adults) can worship at any of our three services and then attend Sunday School classes at 10:15.  While this requires a “two hour” commitment, it is certainly worthwhile.  It is important to remember that a service of worship and a Sunday School class serve different purposes.  A child who attends worship experiences the dynamic of a public service where the church offers its praise to God, where the Word is proclaimed and enacted in the Sacraments.  Sunday School lessons are geared toward nurturing faith which is a life-long endeavor.  Hence, both children and adults are to be involved in both worship and Christian Education.

Have you ever want to help out at your church but just don’t have the time?  Well here is a chance for you to become involved.  The Deacons are looking for families and individuals to be greeters before each worship service.  All you need to do is come ˝ hour before the start of the service with a big smile and a warm hand shake.  That’s it! You can volunteer as many times as you wish. If you are interested please fill out the form in the  bulletin and put it in the offering plate.  Or contact Lucille Fennimore
